Oklahoma HS track & field: Takeaways from first day of Class 4A-A state meets

The state track and field meets for Classes 4A through A began Friday.

Classes 4A and 3A competed at Ardmore, while the bottom two classes were at Western Heights.

Along with preliminaries taking place, athletes competed for titles in some events.

Classes 4A and 2A had their finals in the high jump, shot put and pole vault. Classes 3A and A had championships in the long jump and discus.

All classes had finals races in the 3,200-meter run, 3,200 relay and 800 relay. The remaining championship events and races will be held Saturday.

Here are some takeaways from the first day of action, with an emphasis on Oklahoma City-area athletes and teams.

Four OKC-area athletes claim titles in 3,200

The 3,200 is the longest race during the track and field season, and it’s placed on Friday to manage fatigue since long-distance runners often compete in other events.

Four OKC-area runners claimed titles in the race — Heritage Hall senior Jackson Fowler, Bethel sophomore Baylee Tapley, Meeker senior Riley Randall and Minco junior Daigan Miller.

Fowler claimed the Class 3A championship as he finished in 10 minutes, 14.99 seconds. Crossings Christian sophomore Trey Bishop wasn’t far behind and placed second in 10:19.43.

Tapley was the girls champion in Class 3A with a time of 12:38.86.

Randall and Miller were the Class 2A champions.

Randall finished in 10:14.14, while Miller had a time of 12:11.82.

Heritage Hall’s 800 relay finishes just behind Owasso Rejoice Christian

Heritage Hall’s 800 relay squad was painfully close to claiming a title.

The Chargers broke a Class 3A state meet record with a time of 1:28.46, but Owasso Rejoice Christian finished in 1:28.45 for the narrow victory.

Heritage Hall’s 800 relay team includes freshman Jerrod Williams, junior Jordyn Harris, senior River Faulkner and junior Andy Bass.

Owasso Rejoice Christian’s squad has sophomore Cale Marley, senior Bryce Revard, junior Josh Hendricks and senior Peyton Baker.

The two teams are loaded with players who star on the football field, and their race was a classic battle.

Southwest Covenant’s Zane Zamanski wins shot put crown

Southwest Covenant junior Zane Zamanski proved himself last year, winning Class A titles in the shot put and discus.

Now competing in Class 2A, he showed the move won’t stop him from winning more championships.

Zamanski won the shot put title with a throw of 53 feet, 5¼ inches.

He finished ahead of Fairview senior Kaden Pettus, who placed second with a toss of 50-7.

Zamanski was selected to The Oklahoman’s All-City first team last year. He had some impressive tosses at the state meet last year as he won the shot put with a throw of 52-½ and the discus with a heave of 146-2.

Other standout performances

● Minco freshman Julie Hoehner won the Class 2A championship in the shot put (35-5¾).

Tuttle senior and OU basketball signee Landry Allen placed second in the high jump (5-4) at the Class 4A state meet.
