Oklahoma high school girls basketball: Roundup of Class 6A-5A regional quarterfinals

After games were pushed back two days due to weather complications the state faced throughout the week, the Class 6A-5A regional tournament began on Saturday.

Here’s a quick look at some of the action:

GUTHRIE 53, GUYMON 52

Anjewl Murillo took the screen from the post and dribbled to the elbow of the free-throw line.

The junior from Guthrie had her shot falling all night so in the final minutes of the game, she didn’t hesitate. Murillo drained the shot to give Guthrie a three-point lead in the final two minutes of the game and the Bluejays narrowly held on.

Guymon missed the potential game-winning layup in the final seconds and Guthrie escaped with a 53-52 win at Carl Albert to advance to the Regional-1 championship.

“We didn’t make any changes,” Guthrie coach Malcolm Roberts said. “It’s a playoff atmosphere and we kind of a had a few jitters but that kind of wore off, especially around the third and part of the fourth we were really rolling pretty good.”

After falling behind by 10 points in the first half, the Bluejays turned on their press defense and it worked wonders for them. Guthrie routinely fought for steals and Murillo benefited either scoring or assisting on a majority of the baskets.

Guthrie's one flaw was its free-throw shooting making just three of its final eight attempts.

“Down the stretch, we were just missing free throws,” Roberts said. “If we make our free throws we don’t put ourselves in that position. That could have been tragic, luckily jitters hit them at that time.”

Murillo finished with 18 points while teammates McKenna Gatson turned in 11 and Mariah Dightman finished with eight points. The championship will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

PUTNAM NORTH 53, PONCA CITY 47

Jasmine Mcloud, Karrigan Powell and Nini Geretta couldn’t be stopped when Putnam North needed them most on Saturday.

After falling behind in the first half, Ponca City stormed back to tie the game as Ashlynn Fincher finished with 23 points. But Putnam North wouldn’t let its hot start fault the Panthers in the end and it was the trio that was most responsible.

Putnam North took down Ponca City 53-47 in double overtime at Sand Springs to advance to the Class 6A regional-4 final.

“Some of our older players really stepped up with their leadership,” Putnam North coach Logan Martin said, “just to pull it out really and not lose their poise.”

Seniors Mcloud finished with 15 and Powell turned in 14 while freshman Geretta finished with 13 in the win. Putnam North will take on Sand Springs in the regional final on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

CARL ALBERT 73, ALTUS 26

Saliyah Landon just could not miss in the first quarter.

Carl Albert’s junior scored the first 11 points for the Titans with three 3-point baskets in the quarter. She finished with 14 points in the first quarter and 16 in the one half she played.

Landon’s hot start led to Carl Albert’s 73-26 route over Altus to advance to the Regional-1 championship game. The top-ranked team in Class 5A didn’t have any trouble with Altus, which hadn’t won a game all season.

The Titans jumped to a double-digit first-quarter lead and didn’t look back from there, holding Altus to single-digit scoring in all four quarters. Once a majority of the starters sat down, Carl Albert’s Ausha Moore and Evi Mitchell took over. Mitchell scored nine of her 14 points in the final quarter while Moore scored four of her 17 points.

Carl Albert will take on Guthrie in the regional championship at Carl Albert Tuesday at 7 p.m.

MOORE 58, PUTNAM CITY 30

Nothing was getting past Moore's defense on Saturday.

After producing a 24-17 halftime lead, Moore put together a big run, scoring 17 points in the third and fourth quarter while holding Putnam City to eight and five, respectively. The most points Moore gave up was in the second quarter (12).

The Lions countered with impressive offensive shooting. Albony Bryles led all scorers with 15 points while Kayla Jones (14) and Brooklyn Haywood (13) followed.
