The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating the death of an escaped inmate during a SWAT standoff at a Mason hotel Monday night as an officer involved shooting, the state agency confirmed.

According to Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost' office, Mason Police Department requested assistance from Ohio BCI to look into the inmate's death.

The Warren County Coroner's Office said the inmate killed was Thomas Cromwell, 27. The other inmate who escaped from the Camp Washington facility is Shawn Black, 29.

River City Correctional Center chief Scott McVey said Black is still at large. The facility is partnering with agencies in Hamilton County and surrounding counties to apprehend him, he said.

Though River City Correctional is in Hamilton County, it is not the responsibility or under the supervision of the sheriff's office. It is governed by a board supervised by judges.

The SWAT situation began about 6:30 p.m. Monday at Baymont Hotel when Cromwell refused to surrender to deputies who arrived to arrest him three hours prior, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Cromwell reportedly told police he was armed. It A standoff lasted into the early hours of Tuesday.

The SWAT standoff came after after Cromwell and Black escaped from River City Correctional in the early hours of Saturday. They left through a window that was broken and covered with plywood three days prior, though it is unknown who broke it.

The Ohio BCI investigation into Cromwell's death is still underway.
