Not spring yet: Amarillo expects an inch of snow Thursday night, 0-degree wind chill
Amarillo is expected to see around an inch of snow with a 0-degree wind chill in upcoming snowstorm expected to hit Amarillo Thursday night.
According to Aaron Ward, science and operations officer for the National Weather Service Amarillo, light snow with periods of moderate snow will begin Thursday night after midnight and will continue through Friday morning into the afternoon.
"There may be very light snow flurries during the day Thursday, but the main accumulation that we are expecting will occur Thursday night into early Friday morning, with most of the snow ending by or a little after noon on Friday," Ward said.
The Code Blue Warming Station - Amarillo will be open Thursday at 7 p.m. until Friday at 7:30 a.m. at the Amarillo Housing First facility at 207 N Tyler, due to the expected single digit wind chill in the area. They welcome anyone who is unsheltered, and their pets, to come indoors overnight and be safe and warm during extreme winter weather.

The storm system is expected to begin north of Amarillo in the Oklahoma area and northern region of the Texas Panhandle and then travel south. Amarillo is expected to see 25 to 30 mph winds in this storm, which may cause a visibility hazard Thursday night, with a wind chill of 0 degrees in the city. However, that could drop down as low as a -10 degree wind chill for the surrounding area.

"Friday morning is when the main travel impacts will occur, and I do think we could see some snow sticking to the roads and causing some safety hazards, so folks will definitely want to be aware of that," Ward said.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo's twitter page, crews have already begun pretreating the roads by spraying brine and in the area in preparation of the wintry weather.
