Morocco stops German feed grain imports over foot-and-mouth disease
Morocco has halted imports of feed grains from Germany following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, the head of Morocco's grain trade federation (FNCL) said on Thursday. The import suspension affected "all untreated plant-based feed intended for animal consumption from Germany due to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak there," Omar Yacoubi told Reuters. A source at Morocco's food safety agency ONSSA confirmed that plant-based imports from Germany for animal feed had been "suspended" until Germany is declared free of foot and mouth again or certifies local regions that are free of the disease.

Germany's main opposition conservatives, who are tipped to win a national election on Feb. 23, pushed through parliament on Wednesday a motion calling for a drastic crackdown on migration with the help of votes from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is polling in second place. Though the motion is non-binding, the AfD's role in passing it was symbolically important.

The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits fell last week in a sign that the labor market remains strong. Applications for jobless benefits fell by 16,000 to 207,000 for the week ending January 25, the Labor Department said Thursday. Analysts were expecting 225,000 new applications.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Thursday said those behind death threats against a judge and prosecutors trying her in a graft trial should be punished, in her first comments on a police investigation into the abuse. Reuters reported this week that police are investigating threats against a judge and two prosecutors in the trial, which could derail Le Pen's hopes of running in the 2027 presidential vote where polls have her as frontrunner. Lead prosecutors Louise Neyton and Nicolas Barret have asked for a five-year ban from public office for Le Pen.

U.S. economy grows solid 2.3% from October to December, 2.8% for full year 2024
The American economy ended 2024 on a solid note with consumer spending continuing to drive growth. The Commerce Department reported Thursday that gross domestic product — the economy's output of goods and services — expanded at a 2.3% annual rate from October through December. Consumer spending grew at a 4.2% pace, fastest since January-March 2023 and up from 3.7% in July-September last year.

No survivors from plane, helicopter collision in Washington
US officials said Thursday there were likely no survivors after a passenger jet carrying 64 people collided in midair with a military helicopter and crashed into the icy waters of Washington's Potomac river.Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac river and the fuselage of the passenger jet was inverted and broken into three sections.

Serbia's striking students set off on 2-day march north as their protest movement widens
They packed up food, water and extra clothes and set off. Hundreds of Serbian university students on Thursday started an 80-kilometer (50-mile) march toward the northern city of Novi Sad, the latest endeavor in their widening protest movement over a deadly overhang collapse in November that killed 15 people. The students started from the capital, Belgrade, and plan to arrive in two days in Novi Sad, where a massive blockade of the city bridges over the Danube is planned for Saturday to mark three months since the huge concrete construction at the railway station fell on the people below on Nov. 1.

ECB cuts interest rates and keeps more easing on table
The European Central Bank cut interest rates as expected on Thursday and kept more easing on the table, sticking to its view that inflation in the euro zone is increasingly under control despite concerns about global trade. The fifth ECB rate cut since June, which had been well telegraphed to the market, lowered the rate that the central bank pays on deposits to 2.75% from 3.0%. Starmer is under pressure to deal with tens of thousands of people who arrive to the UK each year on small boats, a key issue of concern for British voters, after he pledged in last year's election campaign to "smash the gangs" controlling the people smuggling trade. The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill introduced to parliament on Thursday will allow the police to seize the mobile phones of asylum seekers to help track down people smugglers, and target those suspected of supplying parts used in the small boats to transport people to England.
