NCAA track and field roundup: Lehigh's Jeremiah Davis wins two medals for Florida State

Several Southwest Florida athletes appeared at the biggest stage of outdoor collegiate track and field earlier this month with a couple collecting some hardware at the NCAA meet in Eugene, Oregon.

Florida State sophomore Jeremiah Davis, a Lehigh graduate, walked away with a silver medal in the long jump and got seventh place in the triple jump. The Seminole men finished in fourth place.

“It was a relief, honestly,” Davis said of his results, adding that he battled some ups and downs throughout the season.

Virginia discus thrower Jacob Lemmon, a Fort Myers graduate, and Miami runner Moriah Oliveira, an ECS graduate, didn’t reach the podium but came away with valuable experience.

“It was definitely a dream come true,” said Oliveira, who qualified for the first time.

Oliveira had plenty to be proud of, putting up a personal best time in the 400 meters after winning the ACC title in the event.

“It was humbling,” she said. “It was great to be racing with some of the best people in the country.”

For Davis, the success meant a lot because he couldn’t compete during last year’s outdoor season after tearing his hamstring.

“The experience — it was once in a lifetime,” he said.

Davis also knows what it takes to win gold. In the long jump, he matched the winning mark of 8 meters, but the tie was broken because his tying opponent had the better second-best mark.

The outcome made Davis hungrier to achieve even more.

“I feel like I’ll be prepared for next year,” he said.
