Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's 2020 VMAs performance was, unsurprisingly, incredible. The two pop queens joined forces to sing their hit “Rain on Me” for the first time, and it was everything fans hoped for and more. We got costumes! We got choreography! We got perfectly blended, harmonized vocals! There was a lot of anticipation going into this performance, as it was Gaga's first from her Chromatica era as well as her return to the VMAs stage after seven years. She did not disappoint.

Fresh off their Song of the Year win, Gaga and Grande absolutely left it all on the stage. And yes, they BOTH wore masks. Oh, and they didn't just perform “Rain on Me”—Gaga started off with “Chromatica II” right into “911,” before Grande joined for “Rain on Me.” Finally, Gaga hit us with a quick change and sang the hell out of “Stupid Love” at the piano.

We know you just want to watch, so go ahead and check it out, below, and then we can discuss it.

Here's how those on the Internet who survived the performance reacted:

“Rain on Me” is one of  2020's undisputed songs of the summer. It reached number one on Billboard's Hot 100 and enjoyed high chart placement for several weeks. The accompanied album, Chromatica, also went to number one and is one of Gaga's most critically-revered works.

While doing press for the album, Gaga opened up about how she was originally apprehensive to be friends with Grande after they finished “Rain on Me.” “She was so persistent. She would try over and over again to be friends with me,” Gaga told Zane Lowe for Apple Beats 1. “And I was too ashamed to hang out with her because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful."

“Eventually she called me on my shit. She was, like ‘You’re hiding,’” Gaga continued. “And I was like, ‘I am hiding. I’m totally hiding.’ And then this friendship blossomed.”

The song “Rain on Me” is all about dancing through your pain. “One time I felt like I was crying so much it would never stop. Instead of fighting it, I thought bring it on, I can do hard things,” Lady Gaga tweeted upon the song’s release. “@arianagrande I love you for your strength and friendship. Let’s show them what we’ve got.”

The MTV VMAs 2020 were half-outside and half-virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Artists, including The Weeknd and Miley Cyrus, performed in several locations around New York City.
