Mookie Betts: 'Everybody was' aware Red Sox were stealing opponents' signs in 2018
The 2017 Houston Astros may be the face of MLB's sign-stealing scandal, but they were far from the only team attempting to get an edge.
The following season, the Boston Red Sox were also cited for illegally stealing signs during the regular season, but an MLB investigation determined that their operation was "far more limited in scope and impact” than the Astros'.
In a Sunday column in the Los Angeles Times, Dodgers star Mookie Betts – a member of the Red Sox team that defeated the Dodgers in the 2018 World Series – admitted he was aware his team was using live video feeds to steal opponents' signs.
“Yeah,” Betts told columnist Dylan Hernandez, “everybody was.”
But Betts said the scheme wasn't used all the time and wasn't at all during the World Series.
"People are trying to make it like we’re cheating," he said. "Give us credit. We had a good team. Give us some credit. We had Cy Young winners. We had MVPs. We had Gold Glove winners. We had Silver Sluggers. We had all that. Take that into account.”
Interestingly, the reason the subject even came up as players started reporting to spring training is that over the winter, the Dodgers hired former Red Sox video replay coordinator J.T. Watkins.
Watkins was the one who deciphered opponents signs by using in-game video and was the only person on the Red Sox suspended as a result of MLB's sign-stealing investigation.
