'A mistake': GOP Senate Leader McConnell calls out Tucker Carlson's downplaying of Jan. 6

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., distanced himself from Fox News’ Tucker Carlson’s depiction of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack that left five people dead, 140 police officers injured and four others officers dead by suicide in the weeks following the riot.

“With regard to the presentation on Fox News last night, I want to associate myself entirely with the opinion of the Chief of the Capitol Police about what happened on January 6,” McConnell said Tuesday, referring to a memo sent by Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger which called the Carlson's depiction “offensive” and misleading.”

What was in Carlson's Jan. 6 segment?

Carlson aired a segment on Monday night that inaccurately depicted the riot as a peaceful gathering where Carlson describes the Capitol rioters as “orderly and meek” and “sightseers."

“My concern is how it was depicted, which is a different issue. Clearly, the Chief of the Capitol Police in my view correctly describes what most of us witnessed firsthand on January 6,” McConnell said of the segment.

“It was a mistake in my view for Fox News to depict this in a way that is completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks,” continued McConnell.

What led up to this?

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave Carlson and Fox News exclusive access to over 41,000 hours of Capitol Security footage. McCarthy’s decision has drawn criticism from lawmakers from both sides of the aisle.
