Car thefts have exploded in the Milwaukee area since 2020, much of it driven by thieves targeting newer Kia and Hyundai models that lack engine immobilizers, an electronic security device that makes it more difficult to start a vehicle without a key.

In 2021, car thefts more than doubled in Milwaukee, totaling almost 10,500 cars, according to police. By July of last year, 66% of the stolen cars in Milwaukee were Kia and Hyundai models — “a number wildly out of proportion with their presence in the city,” according to Alds. Milele Coggs and Khalif Rainey.

The two companies later announced they would provide free steering wheel locks to owners for the rest of 2021 through the Milwaukee Police Department.

As of Monday, Milwaukee police reported more than 1,600 stolen cars in the city this year, a 4% decline from the same date in 2021.
