Middleboro High looks to familiar faces to fill two coaching vacancies

The Middleboro High athletic department announced the hiring (maybe promotion is a better word) of two coaches who are familiar faces.

Steven Chamberlain has been named the new head coach of the boys hockey team, and Joseph Pauze has been named the new head coach of the boys basketball team. Both Chamberlain and Pauze work at the high school and have ties to the programs already.

Both coaches are graduates from MHS (Chamberlain in 2007, Pauze in 2008) and currently work with the baseball team. Chamberlain has been an assistant varsity baseball coach for the last nine years and the team has two state titles during that time. Pauze coaches the freshman baseball team.

"I am honored for the opportunity to lead the Sachems ice hockey team," said Chamberlain in a press release. "Ice hockey has played a major role in my life since a young age and I look forward to sharing my passion and knowledge of the game with each athlete who participates in our program."

"I am very excited for the opportunity to help student-athletes achieve further success in the Middleboro basketball program," said Pauze. "Through hard word, commitment and focus we hope to continue to build upon the program's recent success."

It all adds up

Chamberlain has been working at Middleboro High since 2012 and is currently the head of the mathematics department. He's spent the last 10 years as an assistant with the hockey team.

"Steve Chamberlain is a true teacher-coach," said Middleboro High athletic director Ryan Sylvia in a press release. "He has the ability to mentor students both in the classroom and on the ice. Steve has demonstrated a commitment to Middleboro in every aspect of student life but specifically within the athletic department. He has proven his expertise as an assistant hockey coach and I look forward to seeing the ice hockey

program grow and succeed under his leadership as our new head coach."

During his time at Endicott College, Chamberlain was a student assistant coach with the men's hockey team.

"I'm motivated to help students navigate their way through high school while teaching them how to play the game that I love at a high level," said Chamberlain. "My big picture perspective is to help student-athletes develop positive character traits and teach them the skills necessary to be successful in life after high school through competitive sport.

I am excited for the upcoming season and this next chapter of Sachems hockey."

The Sachems are coming off an 8-11-2 finish last season that included a trip to the postseason. Middleboro, which has had co-ops in the past, is in the process of forming a co-op with Wareham and Carver for next season.

No plans to Pauze this growth

Once an afterthought, the Middleboro boys basketball team is coming off two highly successful campaigns.

During a COVID-shortened 2020-2021 season, the Sachems won the South Shore League title for the first time in 22 years. This season, Middleboro went 13-7 and won a tournament game. The Sachems were the only team to defeat Division 4 state champ Randolph.

Pauze, a 2012 Nichols College graduate, is moving over from the girls program, where he had previously coached the junior varsity since 2018. He'll take over for Mike Duarte.

"Joe Pauze has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Middleboro Athletic Department in various coaching roles," said Sylvia. "He has a strong knowledge of the game and a focus on building relationships with his student-athletes and all

stakeholders in the program."
