Michigan State women's basketball's Nia Clouden gaining attention as one of nation's best
EAST LANSING — Just ahead of the official start of her senior season, Nia Clouden has continued to garner preseason national recognition.
After previously being selected preseason All-Big Ten and earning a spot on the Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, Clouden was named to watch lists for the Wooden Award, Wade Trophy and Naismith Women's College Player of Year on Tuesday.
The Wade Trophy recognizes the national player of the year in women's college basketball, while the Wooden Award honors the nation's most outstanding player. Clouden was among nine Big Ten players named to the watch list for the Wooden and Wade awards and MSU coach Suzy Merchant is glad to see her guard earning national recognition.
"It's good to see they collectively took a look at her body of work from a year ago," MSU coach Suzy Merchant said recently of Clouden gaining attention for national awards. "She's deserving and did a great job for three straight years really."
Clouden is coming off a junior season where she ranked fifth in the Big Ten in scoring while earning first-team all-conference honors. She averaged a career-best 18.7 points, 3.9 assists and shot 46.4% from the field and 78% from the free-throw line.
Clouden had nine games with at least 20 points during a junior season where she surpassed 1,000 career points. That included a career-best 34 points in a road loss at nationally ranked Michigan in February.
