Michigan State football: Spartans land Cincinnati transfer safety Armorion Smith

Mel Tucker picked up a draft night addition for Michigan State football.

Safety Armorion Smith announced via Twitter on Friday night that he is transferring from Cincinnati to join the Spartans.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Detroit native was rated the No. 71 safety and No. 893 player overall in the class of 2021 out of River Rouge High according to 247 Sports's composite rankings. He chose the Bearcats over MSU and other offers, but Cincinnati lost coach Luke Fickell this offseason to Wisconsin and Smith left new coach Scott Satterfield’s program for the portal April 19.

Armorion Smith runs a defense drill during practice with the River Rouge High School football team on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2020, in River Rouge. Armorion is a senior safety and signed to play at Cincinnati.

As a redshirt freshman in 2022, Smith made 20 tackles in 12 games between serving as a backup safety and playing on special teams. He had his first career interception and five tackles in Cincinnati's Wasabi Fenway Bowl loss to Louisville.

The Spartans lose Xavier Henderson and Kendell Brooks to graduation but return a number of young safeties, including sophomores Jaden Mangham, Malik Spencer and Khalil Majeed. Senior Angelo Grose returns and can play nickelback, while MSU also moved Harold Joiner III from running back to safety as sophomore Dillon Tatum shifted from safety to cornerback late last season.
