Edwards, ranked No. 44 overall and the No. 4 running back according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, was considered one of the nation's top uncommitted prospects.
This past Michigan high school football season, which was never finished due to the pandemic) Edwards ran the ball 104 times for 882 yards and 18 touchdowns. In his last game before high school football was shutdown, Edwards ran the ball 16 times for 167 yards and six touchdowns in the first half of West Bloomfield's 63-6 win over Sterling Heights Stevenson in the district final. Edwards ran for over 1,400 yards as a junior while the Lakers reached the regional finals.
Michigan has long recruited Edwards; the Wolverines were the first school to offer him a scholarship and numerous members of the staff have reportedly been involved in his recruitment.

Edwards' commitment bolsters U-M's depth in the backfield, as the Wolverines signed just two running backs across the 2019 and 2020 classes in Zach Charbonnet and Blake Corum. Three-star Tavierre Dunlap was the first running back in Michigan's 2021 class.
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Edwards is the highest-ranked running back the Wolverines have landed during Jim Harbaugh's tenure, and the fourth-highest ranked offensive player, after receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones (2017), quarterback J.J. McCarthy (2021) and offensive lineman Ben Bredeson (2016).
This is also a significant in-state recruiting win for Michigan, which landed just four of the state's top-15 ranked prospects in the 2021 class in Edwards (No. 2), offensive tackle Giovanni El-Hadi (No. 4), center Raheem Anderson (No. 7) and receiver Andrel Anthony (No. 13).
