The Merrimac Ferry across the Wisconsin River is closed until further notice
Editor's note: The Merrimac Ferry reopened for use Friday night, July 8, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced.
The Merrimac Ferry, which crosses the Wisconsin River between Okee and Merrimac, is closed for repairs until further notice, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.
The ferry began experiencing a partial loss of power during its crossings on Tuesday morning before it was taken out of service, DOT spokesman Michael Bie said via email. Technicians are on-site and have been working with the manufacturer to diagnose and fix the problem. There is no timeline for when the ferry might be open again.
The ferry, named the Colsac III for the two counties it ferries people between along Highway 113 (Columbia and Sauk), carries passengers and vehicles across the river as long as it is free of ice (typically April through November). It is Wisconsin's only free ferry.
The Colsac III has been in operation since 2003, but ferry service on the river dates back to 1844. It's been operated as a free ferry since the state took over ownership of the original Colsac in 1933.
The ferry can carry 15 cars, and a crossing takes about seven minutes. In 2021, the boat carried 264,728 vehicles on 44,540 trips across the river.
Alternate routes for travelers while the ferry is out of commission include state Highways 60 and 78, U.S. Highway 12 and I-39/90/94, according to the DOT.
