McKenzie girls basketball beats North Greene for first TSSAA state tournament win in 62 years
MURFREESBORO — For the first time since 1960, the McKenzie Lady Rebels can say that they're moving on in the TSSAA girls state basketball tournament.
A strong second half propelled the Lady Rebels past North Greene 58-44 Thursday in the state quarterfinals at Middle Tennessee State's Murphy Center.
Coach John Wilkins said he had no idea it had been so long since McKenzie won a state tournament game.
"It means a lot to me and a lot to our community," Wilkins said. "A lot of time and effort has gone in — we're extremely pleased to be sitting where we are but nowhere near satisfied."
McKenzie (29-2) will play Gleason Friday at 6 p.m. for a spot in the Class 1A championship.

McKenzie's only other state tournament win was 58-37 over Camp Creek in 1960. The Lady Rebels had last appeared in the state tournament in 1963.
The Lady Rebels never trailed, leading by six at the end of the first quarter and nine by halftime.
McKenzie began to pull away in the third quarter outscoring North Greene 17-8 in the period. North Greene (25-13) outscored McKenzie by three in the fourth quarter but the game was out of reach at that point.
McKenzie's Briley Auvenshine led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Dani Dyer added on 13 points. Class 1A Miss Basketball finalist Savannah Davis finished with nine points.
"I didn't really feel comfortable shooting in the gym," Auvenshire said. "But I mean I was just shooting because we have had practice two days in a row and I've been shooting really good."
Shelby Davenport led North Greene with 14 points.
