money Marvel And Sony's New "Morbius" Trailer Just Dropped: Here's The Breakdown
Sony has finally released another trailer for the next addition in their Spider-Man Universe: Morbius, starring Jared Leto!
The film is scheduled to premiere on January 28, 2022, in theaters after being pushed back from last July due to the pandemic. And now, let's break down this trailer to find out what we can expect from Sony Pictures' Morbius.

New story details have emerged!
We learn that Morbius has been missing for two months after his experiment and that he was found in a washed-up shipping container in Long Island (most likely a reference to Nosferatu). He then goes on the hunt as his vampiric nature manifests, leading to him being branded a murderer by the law. This manhunt, seemingly led by Tyrese Gibson's Simon Stroud, forces him to go on the run.
Jared Leto sports a new look.
In the first trailer, we only got a short glimpse at Leto in his vampire form. But now, we finally get a good view of his frightening face, fangs and all — and it really captures his comic book look. It's even scarier than Venom, given his realistic and more humanlike features.
Morbius's powers are explored.
Once again, we got a preview of Morbius's superpowers, which include super-strength and echo-location. But despite him being a vampire, he does not have the weaknesses commonly associated with them. Also, like Venom and his diet of brains, Morbius has an overpowering thirst for blood that conflicts with his morality, especially as a doctor who vowed to save human lives. Oh, and apparently, he can fly.
What universe is this set in?
It's hard to pinpoint what universe Morbius takes place in. For one thing, the eponymous vampire jokingly calls himself Venom, and a police officer seems to reference the events surrounding Venom in San Francisco. However, Michael Keaton appears as what many people are speculating to be the MCU villain, Vulture.
However, there's also that graffiti painting of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man with the word, "MURDERER," over it. Not to mention, we see the Daily Bugle newspaper with the same logo from Tobey's Spidey-flicks. So that's a link to Venom's universe, the MCU, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies — all in one trailer. Sony is infamous for showing too much in their trailers (think Gwen Stacey's death being "shown" in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailers), but this information overload actually helps intensify the mystery of the film. Maybe the universes all merge and collide, much like we saw at the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Is that Vulture?
It looks like Michael Keaton's Vulture is set to return to the screen. It's very likely that Morbius will be put in the same prison as Vulture, where the two of them will meet. The doctor might actually team up with Spidey's old foe and help form the Sinister Six (a different version from the one we may be getting in No Way Home).
Rhino and Black Cat Easter eggs appear.
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that this film is also setting up more of Spidey's villains in a shot of an issue of the Daily Bugle. On the front page, there is a reference to the villain Rhino. There is also a reference to Black Cat, an anti-hero and love interest of Spider-Man.
Moviegoers got their first live-action Rhino with Paul Giamatti fighting Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, in the film, Giamatti's character simply piloted a mech suit that resembles a rhino and was only given a few minutes of screentime. Whether or not Morbius is referencing Giamatti's character remains unknown.
Could it be the Black Cat from TASM2?
Felicity Jones made a cameo appearance as the Black Cat in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where she was Harry Osborn's assistant. However, the film did not introduce her criminal persona.
Sony intended for the character to make her full cinematic debut alongside the mercenary Silver Sable in their own film, Silver & Black. However, the project was axed years ago, and Sony instead decided to have each character star in individual films. Hopefully, we'll get to see this bewitching burglar alongside Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the near future.
All in all, Morbius looks to be an important entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, introducing one new villain and setting up many others that will end up confronting Spider-Man. While it seems like Sony is hinging on these references of the greater Spider-Man universe to make the film successful, we'll just have to wait and see just how good Morbius is.
