Manitowoc and Two Rivers issue parking restrictions as snow accumulates along lakeshore

MANITOWOC - With snow accumulating along the lakeshore Thursday and Friday, both Manitowoc and Two Rivers have issued parking restrictions.

In Manitowoc, city crews were to do a general plow of all city streets Thursday. People were asked to remove vehicles from the street and seek alternative off-street parking.

The city said drivers should stay at least 75 feet behind plows when they have their blades down, adding plows often back up frequently.

The city also issued a winter parking ban that would be in effect from 1 to 6 a.m. Friday in Manitowoc. During those hours, people need to seek alternative parking on non-restricted streets. A violation of the parking ban results in a $50 fine.

Mayor Justin Nickels said Thursday that crews would be out during the day Thursday and would rest through the evening and then start early Friday morning to hit main roads. The goal, he said, was for plows to get the main routes clear of snow for travelers Friday morning.

"With continued snow during these hours, side streets and residential streets may not be plowed fully at this time," Nickels said. "It's just the nature of when the snow falls that will determine when we can hit all streets. This is why there isn't a parking ban on those streets at this time."

Winter parking ban streets include salt routes that include bus and truck routes, arterial streets, state highways, and county trunks within the city’s jurisdiction. More information is at https://www.manitowoc.org/1827/SnowSalt-Maps

In Two Rivers, a parking ban was issued for overnight Thursday into Friday (1-6 a.m. Friday) when no parking would be allowed on city streets.

Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley said plows were likely to be out "in the very early morning hours" Friday and an update on snow removal would be shared Friday.

A hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service in Green Bay Thursday said hazardous travel conditions were expected along the Lake Michigan shoreline Thursday morning, with lake-effect snow showers resulting in localized accumulations of 1 to 2 inches from Manitowoc to Kewaunee to southern Door County.

More snow was expected to develop later Thursday afternoon into Thursday night, with most of the forecast area receiving 1 to 2 inches of accumulation.

The exception would be near Lake Michigan, where lake-enhanced snow could become moderate to heavy at times Thursday night, resulting in additional accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts.

The NWS said travel conditions would be hazardous regionwide, but would especially be treacherous in lakeshore counties.
