After Chip and Joanna Gaines announced that part of their Magnolia Market at the Silo's expansion included a Wiffle ball field, fans have been wondering, well, why. A few weeks ahead of the field's grand opening, the renovation experts answered that question, and it has everything to do with community and the history of the Silos grounds.

A Magnolia blog post explains that the Magnolia Manifesto is centered on the belief that "'it’s time for the pendulum of trend to swing back to the basics''' and the Magnolia team believes that baseball is a reflection of that. "For so many of us, playing or going to a game is a nostalgic, community-led experience that fosters connection and, of course, a lot of fun," the post reads. They also wanted to bring the idea of 'home plate' back to the section of the grounds, which dates all the way back to 1905, because it used to be a baseball field. Also, Chip is a lifelong baseball fan, and he's been involved in the planning of the field.

A timeline in the blog post reveals the rich history of baseball at Katy Park. In its prime, baseball legends like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig traveled to Waco to play at the clubs at Katy Park. But about a decade after the local minor league team played their last game at the park, it was razed to become a parking lot. Now, Chip and Jo are paying homage to the field's history with the new Wiffle ball field, and the home plate will sit in the same exact spot that it did before. And to honor the name of the previous field, they're calling it Katy Ballpark at the Silos.

There's not going to be an actual baseball team, but there will be a mascot: a silo. There's even going to a concession stand next to the field, complete with ballpark favorites, including nachos, soda, and sloppy joes.

Magnolia's Wiffle ball field is set to open this fall. Currently, the Magnolia team is working out ways for guests to use the field when it opens. They're hoping it'll be a space where people can hang out, and they plan to provide equipment for pick up games. Find out more about the new attractions coming to the Silos here.
