Louisville women’s basketball lands transfer portal commitment from Cal guard Jayda Curry

Louisville women's basketball landed another guard via the transfer portal on Monday.

Former Cal shooting guard Jayda Curry entered the portal on March 15 and announced her decision to attend U of L on Bally Sports Monday. The Cardinals used the transfer portal to bring in former Georgia Tech guard Eylia Love in January.

With all of the espnW Class of 2023 top 100 players already committed to other schools, U of L coach Jeff Walz will continue to look to the portal to fill out his 2023-24 team.

"We are thrilled to welcome Jayda Curry to the Cardinal Family," Walz said in a statement. "Jayda brings with her a wealth of experience as a two year starter and all-conference performer at Cal. Her experience and leadership will be counted on to bring us scoring and distribution from the back court. She can perform at both ends of the floor and score at all three levels. There is no doubt she will elevate the production of her teammates around her. Jayda has an infectious personality and the Cardinal faithful will love her passion and enthusiasm for the game."

With Chrislyn Carr and Morgan Jones gone, Curry can have an immediate impact as another scoring option for the Cardinals along with rising senior star Hailey Van Lith.

"I took my visit and I enjoyed everything about it: the coaching staff, the girls, just the program's history, their proven success," Curry told Bally Sports' Brandon Robinson. "I'm just excited to be on that big stage. They just made the Elite Eight this past year and have been there consecutively for a couple years. Just trying to be that person who can come in there and help and impact them and take them a little further, get to the Final Four again and hopefully win a national championship. I'm super excited to start my journey there."

As a sophomore during the 2022-23 season, Curry averaged a team-best 15.5 points per game. The Southern California native's season high of 28 points came in a 101-76 loss to Utah on Feb. 23. She also fared well against one of the ACC's top teams, scoring a game-high 24 points in the Golden Bears' 90-79 loss to Notre Dame on Nov. 12

Cal ended the season with three straight losses and a 13-17 record, missing out on both the NCAA Tournament and NIT.

In addition to her scoring, Curry was second on the team in assists with 106 last season. At U of L, she could serve as another ball handler in the absence of Mykasa Robinson.

Prior to attending Cal, Curry led Centennial (Calif.) High School to a state championship as a senior, averaging 21.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.9 steals per game that season. She also holds the school's record for most points scored in a single game after going off for 50 points in a 100-77 victory during her senior season.

In 2021, Curry, a two-year starter, became the first freshman to lead the Pac-12 Conference in scoring with 18.6 points per outing and was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year having received the conference's freshman of the week honor five times.
