Longtime Passaic County Sheriff Edwin Englehardt has died at 93

Lifelong Paterson resident and former Passaic County Sheriff Edwin Englehardt died Thursday at the age of 93.

Englehardt served as Passaic County sheriff for 27 years, from 1974 until 2001, before retiring. He is remembered in his obituary as loyal, patriotic and generous.

Before his career as sheriff, Englehardt joined the Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War, being discharged in 1956. He was president of Neil Grand Hardware Inc. in 1955 before beginning his political career.

He became Paterson's Alcohol Beverage Control commissioner in 1963 before serving as the city's police commissioner from 1965 until 1971. He was on the board of directors of AAA in 1989 and served as chairman of Local Board 37 of the Selective Service System for six years starting in 1970.

Englehardt leaves behind a number of family members, including a niece and a nephew, in addition to numerous friends.

Current Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik extended his "deepest sympathies" to Englehardt's family.

"Being the longest-serving sheriff in the history of Passaic County is certainly noteworthy and will be part of Sheriff Engelhardt’s long-term legacy," Berdnik said. "His work certainly started the process that has allowed the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office to now become a modern and effective law enforcement agency."

The funeral Mass will take place Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Cathedral, 381 Grand St., Paterson. Friends and family will be received from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Englehardt will be buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa.

The family asks that donations be made to Passaic County Sheriff's Officers PBA Local 286, P.O. Box 731, Woodland Park, NJ, 07424, with a notation specifying the Passaic County Sheriff Canine Unit.
