Longtime Hugh Freeze assistant reports he's new Jackson State football offensive coordinator

Recent Twitter activity gives a strong clue about coach T.C. Taylor's plans for Jackson State football's offense in 2023.

According to former Liberty co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Maurice Harris' Twitter page, he has been hired as Jackson State's offensive coordinator. That means the Tigers' offense could look a lot like Hugh Freeze's offenses at Liberty and Ole Miss.

Harris worked with Freeze, hired as Auburn coach two months ago, for the past four seasons at Liberty. Harris also worked with Freeze at Ole Miss (2012-18) as the recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach. Don't be surprised to see JSU play a Freeze-like up-tempo offense with the tight ends being a big part of the passing game.

While at Ole Miss, Harris helped mold Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram into the 23rd pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Engram finished his career with a school-record 162 receptions for 2,320 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Engram was a first-team All-American in 2016 and won the Ozzie Newsome Award, presented annually to the nation's top tight end.

In addition to listing himself on his Twitter account as "Offensive coordinator at Jackson State University," Harris retweeted a post from the account of White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee, that includes a photo of Harris with a man in White Station warmups and the caption "Appreciate Jackson State University for stoping by to inquire about some of our guys." Harris is wearing a sweatshirt with a large "J" on the front.

Harris has experience in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, of which Jackson State is a member. He coached at Alabama State (2004-2005 and 2007) as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
