Why is that? Well, there's nothing quite like the empire that Kris, Kim, Khloé, Kourtney, Kendall, Kylie, and Rob have built. While other celebs maintain one or two businesses at most, the reality show royalty has launched over 26 (yeah, you read that right!) businesses since their rise to fame in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

While some become massive triumphs that dwarf market competitors — looking at you Kylie Cosmetics and SKIMS — others have fallen to the wayside, merely becoming lessons learned for the KarJenner's to look back on as they somehow climb even higher on the latter of success. Seriously though, who here has ever read Kylie and Kendall Jenner's young adult novel or actually used Khroma Beauty?

And as part of the trials and tribulations of owning a celebrity business, hardships and compromises have affected the brood's brands before, with some of their companies facing ethical and moral controversy as well as lawsuits over the years. Despite some obstacles along the path to success, our favorite family members who consistently compete for the highest net worth totally live by the mantra "If you don't succeed at first, try, try again," as their persistence has amounted to some of the most iconic brands of the century.

Following the backlash from the culture-appropriative name for her new shapewear and lounge brand back in 2019, Kim quickly pivoted her brand's title from 'Kimono' to SKIMS.

Despite a slightly rocky start, the self-described "solutions-oriented brand creating the next generation of underwear, loungewear and shapewear" is a monumental success, with the brand being valued at $3.2 billion according to Bloomberg.

Kim and her sisters are often seen rocking the brand, which has now grown to include limited-edition collections and swimwear.

Kendall Jenner's tequila brand 818 which is produced from local, family-owned agave farms in Jalisco, Mexico, is award-winning and beloved by celebs like Hailey Bieber and Katy Perry according to Page Six. However, the fairly new brand is not free of controversy.

In May 2021 Jenner was criticized for culturally appropriating Mexican culture after sharing the shots on IG from a campaign for her tequila company liquor company.

The ad featured scenes of the supermodel riding on horseback in an agave field where native farmers were seen harvesting agave. The clip ends with Jenner raising with them. After the immediate backlash, Kendall disabled comments on the post.

Despite the criticism, 818 Tequila continues to thrive, recently participating in Revolve Festival and hosting a pop-up at New York Fashion Week according to Gotham Magazine.

This one needs no introduction, but we'll give it to you anyways.

At the young age of 18, Kylie Jenner entered the beauty industry with the launch of Kylie Lip Kits in late 2015. The collection of three liquid lipsticks with corresponding lip liners sold out almost immediately according to Women's Wear Daily.

From there, Kylie launched limited-edition collections of lip products for holidays and collaborations with her sisters. She then further expanded the brand to include eye products, makeup brushes, and merch.

In 2017, highlighters were introduced, also adding more formulations of lip and eye products to the brand. The brand became available in Ulta stores in 2018, which was huge since the brand had been online since its inception.

Kylie Cosmetics has since added a skincare line, Kylie Skin as well as a Kylie Baby, a skincare and haircare line for children.

So what's Kylie got next up her business blazer sleeve for her billion-dollar company? It looks like fake eyelashes, with her recent trademarking of the name KYLASH.

The three Kardashian sisters opened the doors to Dash Boutique in Calabasas, California in 2006. The store featured a curated selection of high-end clothing and accessories, with the operation expanding into multiple locations including Miami and Manhattan.

Did you know that Kim and her sisters originally signed up to film Keeping up with the Kardashians to build their store's presence? It's true!

Kim told Variety back in 2015, "I was thinking this might not last very long, but we’ll grow a great business and expand online. I thought it would be great press. I didn’t think it would turn into what it turned into."

After appearing on spin-off series such as Kourtney and Khloé Take The Hamptons and Dash Dolls — a show dedicated to the lives of the Dash Boutique's employees — and opening a sister store children's boutique called Smooch, the retailer officially shuttered in 2018.

Speaking of Dash, following a fight with sisters Khloé and Kourtney over her fragrance deal, Kim decided to change the name of her 2009 perfume from the boutique-inspired title "Dashing" to her name.

The sophisticated scent was mainly floral, with notes of jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, and with a warmer base of tonka bean, jacaranda wood, and sandalwood.

Though the product was discontinued, this perfume paved the way for her future in the fragrance industry.

With fellow dystopian movies made from books having a moment in 2014 — think The Hunger Games and Divergent— Kendall and Kylie decided to release a young adult, sci-fi book, hoping that it would turn into a full novel series.

Unfortunately, their story Rebels: City Of Indra: The Story Of Lex And Livia did not do well. According to data from the Nielsen BookScan from September 2014, obtained by Radar, the book that debuted in June 2014 had only sold 13,000 copies so far.

In addition, reviewers on Amazon gave the ghostwritten novel a mediocre rating, leaving the Jenners to abandon their writing aspirations and future author status.

While Kylie and Kendall's book didn't take off, other family members have seen success in the literary industry with Kris Jenner launching the cookbook In the Kitchen with Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites in 2014 and older sis Kim debuting the coffee table book selfie book, Selfish, in 2015.

The ultimate destination for Kardashian superfans in the 2010s was the souvenir store Kardashian Khaos, which was located inside The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The shop offered everything from key rings, beach towels, and t-shirts with the girls' faces emblazoned across the front to the Kardashian-family branded products.

Kardashian Khaos continued to host special appearances from the clan until the store's demise in 2014.

In 2011, Sears and the older sister trio teamed up to produce a clothing line that was forecasted to bring in $200 to $300 million per year according to Fortune.

No sooner than after the pieces hit 400 stores, the family was slammed for allegedly manufacturing some of their collections in foreign sweatshops, where there were allegations of worker abuse.

Charles Kernaghan, the executive director of the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights said in an interview with Star Magazine via Radar, “The Kardashians are in bed with some pretty bad people.

Radar added that the workers were supposedly living in "squalid factory-run dormitories filled with the stench of sewage while toiling up to 84 hours during seven-day weeks."

A spokesperson for the Kardashians vehemently denied the accusations, saying to the Washington Post that there is "no truth to these allegations."

The collection was pulled in 2015, but consumers had already gotten their hands on the products and had plenty of opinions.

Fashion journalist Terri Agins wrote in her book Hijacking the Runway: How Celebrities Are Stealing the Spotlight From Fashion Designers, "The print looked rubber-stamped on, and the fabric was full of static. It had the quality of a cheap Halloween costume," in reference to a leopard print V-neck dress from the collection.

Picture this: it's the year 2012, and the American Kardash gals are taking over the U.K. following the launch of their Kardashian Kollection at Sears. The limited-edition line at Dorothy Perkins featured a lot of animal print and peplums, which feel like a far cry from the monochrome, Yeezy-esque outfits they sport today.

Kim Kardashian launched her jewelry line, Belle Noel, back in January 2011. She collaborated alongside designer Pascal Mouawad to create the costume jewelry pieces that fit her glamorous and flashy aesthetic. The whole line was fairly accessible too, with pieces ranging from $18 to $175.

In June 2017, Kimmy taught us how to get her famous carved facial look by debuting a collection of contouring kits under the brand name KKW Beauty. Months later, Kardashian grew her beauty empire to cover perfumes with the unveiling of sister brand spin-off, KKW Fragrance.

Both brands continued to grow, unveiling lipsticks, lip glosses, eyeshadow palettes, and perfume collaborations with family members. Kim even told Women's Wear Daily in an interview that the two brand's sales had doubled in one year.

Despite Kim's glowing outlook, she decided to take a hiatus from the KKW Beauty and "come back to you under a completely new brand with new formulas that are more modern, innovative and packaged in an elevated and sustainable new look," according to a tweet.

Fans have speculated that the rebranding comes from Kim's divorce from Kanye West, with her wanting to drop the 'W' from the name KKW as it stands for "West."

While KKW Fragrance's website is still working, all of the perfumes are on deep discount, meaning that KKW Frangrance is most likely also being renamed and rebranded.

And we can't talk about Rob without mentioning his novelty and fashion sock company Arthur George. The company whose moniker is two family middle names combined began as a men's accessory line that produced socks with quirky 2010s slang like "YOLO" printed on the soles.

Sadly though, in 2018 Rob was allegedly in $300K of debt and was forced to sell half of the company to his mom in order to keep it afloat according to Cosmopolitan. Kris has been running the brand — which has now expanded to include women's and children's socks — since then.

Celebrating what at the time seemed like an "unbreakable bond," married couple Khloé and Lamar Odom launched a unisex gourmand perfume just before Valentine's Day of 2011.

Unfortunately, their love (and perfume) was not built to last. The couple divorced in 2016 after seven years of marriage, and the fragrance become a long-forgotten relic of the 2010s.

Honestly, this brand feels like a fever dream as it did not last long at all. With just a few quotes from the sisters published in PR Newswire saying that the 3-step skincare system "is the only product we use," and a couple of outdated infomercial style clips on YouTube, we can safely conclude that the brand died out fairly quickly the same year it started, never to be mentioned by them again.

Who would've thought that Kim helped start ShoeDazzle, the subscription shoe, handbag, and jewelry brand that showed up on our TV screens at every commercial break?

Kardashian co-founded the start-up back in 2009 and it has since gone on to be acquired by rival online fashion subscription service, JustFab according to Business Insider. Though Kim is no longer involved in the business, you can still purchase affordable shoes from the ShoeDazzle website, which occasionally hosts celeb collections from stars such as Tinashe and Rita Ora.

The Kimoji app gave smartphone users a curation of over 250 Kim Kardashian-themed emojis and animated GIFs to use when sending messages. For $1.99, phone users could access iconic icons depicting Kardashian's bodily assets as well as Kim's crying face, hearts, doughnuts, and kisses.

The app was disbanded in 2018 as it wasn't proving to be lucrative enough to justify the many legal troubles it was faced with, including a $100 million lawsuit according to TMZ.

In November 2010, the elder Kardashian sisters announced that they would be launching a prepaid debit card called the Kardashian Kard. After launching its website, announcing its fees, and releasing the card, it was quickly pulled from the market due to intense criticism.

The main complaint was that the card had extremely high fees according to the official website, and was preying on young teenagers as the marketing clearly skewed towards that age range. After CNN, multiple news outlets, and government officials voiced their concerns about the product, the kard was officially kanceled.

"Kim Kardashian: Hollywood" is a free-to-play role-playing game app that was released in June 2014. In the game, the player's main goal is to increase their fame and reputation, with them starting on the E-list and being able to rise all the way to the A-list. To do this, the player must complete specific tasks like going on dates and taking jobs.

While it's not as big of a pop culture deal now, in 2016, the app made Kim $45 million richer in the span of two years according to her cover story in Forbes.

Little sisters Kylie and Kendall followed in their big sis Kim's footsteps by launching a mobile role-playing app of their own. Similar to the objectives in Kim's game, players seek to up their fame and follower count, completing tasks to rise from the 100 follower club up to the 1 million follower club.

According to Vox, the game was shut down in 2018 after the KarJenner's did an overhaul of their app endeavors that were turning out to not be as profitable as they initially hoped.

Ahh yes, the humble and forgotten predecessor to the host of successful beauty brands the reality family has gone on to launch. Khroma Beauty was launched as an Ulta exclusive line in 2012, but the products were quickly pulled from the shelves.

According to Fashionista, multiple brands sued Khroma Beauty for copyright infringement, claiming that the brand name was too close to pre-existing brand names. Khroma Beauty tried to keep the name, but they lost the legal battle and renamed it Kardashian Beauty.

The trouble doesn't stop there though. While their products started to gain fans, with Kardashian Beauty's 3-in-1 Hairstyling Iron even earning an Allure Best of Beauty Award in 2015, the sister's brand was faced with more legal problems.

"In 2016, Khloé, Kourtney, and Kim were named as defendants in a civil lawsuit brought by Hillair Capital Management. The firm claimed it put $10 million into the sisters' Kardashian Beauty after the previous business partner, Boldface, began to struggle. Hillair bought out Boldface, but because the sisters were unhappy with the terms of the deal, they simply stopped promoting the brand publicly," said Fashionista.

Hillair's suit against the sisters had the goal of earning back its $10 million, as well as the estimated $180 million in revenue the brand was projected to bring in if the Kardashians had been promoting the products.

The legal troubles were far from one-sided though. The Kardashians claimed that they hadn't seen any royalties — AKA money — from Hillair. According to Forbes, the sisters won the lawsuit in 2021 and were awarded $13.5 million.
