What we know about the man accused of shooting at Indianapolis police officers
The suspect in the Thursday afternoon shooting that injured two Indianapolis police officers has been identified as Daniel Yefter Ghebrehiwet, a 46-year-old man.
Ghebrehiwet died after an exchange of gunfire with four officers who were assisting in a firearms investigation when they saw a potential suspect and began a brief vehicle pursuit and the gunfire ensued. An AR-15-style rifle was found next to Ghebrehiwet, police said.
Here’s what’s known about him:
Who is Daniel Yefter Ghebrehiwet?
Ghebrehiwet is a 46-year-old man whose last listed address is in northwest Indianapolis.
Why was he pursued by police?
Ghebrehiwet’s connection to the investigation being conducted Thursday by the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force and Lawrence Police is unclear. Indianapolis police officials said the officers were investigating a previous shooting that occurred in Lawrence when they saw a potential suspect and attempted a traffic stop.
The driver, Ghebrehiwet, fled west on East 30th, turned into a business parking lot and continued southbound before driving into a grassy area along the back of some houses.
The vehicle was halted by the terrain, which is where Ghebrehiwet is alleged to have fired at officers. Four Indianapolis officers returned fire, striking him.
A passenger in the car was taken into custody on an unrelated narcotics warrant out of Marion County. He also is facing charges of resisting arrest and residential entry in connection to Thursday's events.
Does Daniel Yefter Ghebrehiwet have a criminal history?
The 46-year-old is listed in a police report about a shooting that occurred on April 10 in the 6800 block of East 47th Street in Lawrence.
Lawrence police told IndyStar that a person was reported shot in that incident, but when officers arrived at the scene, they did not find anyone injured.
Capt. Travis Cline said Ghebrehiwet’s involvement in the case is still being investigated.
According to online Marion County court records, Ghebrehiwet pleaded guilty in 2017 to carrying a handgun without a license, with a prior conviction of the same offense. His two charges of pointing a firearm were dismissed. He was sentenced to three years in prison with a release date in 2019.
Ghebrehiwet in 2006 was found guilty of carrying a handgun without a license in Marion County. Four additional charges, including criminal recklessness, battery and pointing a firearm, were dismissed.
