King Charles III and his family were pictured the day before Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral and the final farewell to Britain's longest serving monarch.

The King was photographed alongside Camilla, Queen Consort, and the Prince and Princess of Wales at Buckingham Palace ahead of a reception for heads of state on Sept 18.

Dressed all in black and smiling warmly, the family stood shoulder to shoulder before a golden balcony in a show of solidarity as Britain's most senior royals.

The photograph at the reception comes after it emerged that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were invited to the event in error.

The couple received a formal invitation to the event for world leaders and foreign royals and had no reason to believe they were not expected to go.

However, palace aides subsequently declared that only working members of the Royal family would attend.

The palace reception was a formal occasion for all of the presidents and prime ministers, foreign royals, governors-general and ambassadors who had travelled to London for the funeral.

Invitees included ambassadors from North Korea and Iran. They were driven into the gates of Buckingham Palace in the early evening and greeted by the King and Queen Consort before socialising in the picture gallery and state apartments.

The King continued to meet with world leaders this week. He on Saturday welcomed Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, and his wife to Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

It was one of the King's first official audiences as monarch since royal mourning ended.

The King and his Queen Consort have met the couple on previous occasions, including on a visit to the Commonwealth realm as part of their 2019 Caribbean tour.

The couple also attended the wedding reception in 2011 of Kate and William, who are now the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

Charles and Camilla are set to hold their first joint public engagement since royal mourning ended by visiting Dunfermline on Monday to mark it achieving city status.

They will attend an official council meeting at the City Chambers and visit Dunfermline Abbey as part of the celebrations.

They will also host a reception at Edinburgh's Palace of Holyroodhouse to celebrate British South Asian communities.
