Greece bans windowless basements, freezes central Athens licenses in overhaul of short-term rentals
Lawmakers in Greece began debating proposed legislation on Friday to toughen rules for short-term rentals amid a surge in tourism, including a ban on using converted storage spaces and windowless basements. Renovated warehouses, underground spaces and former industrial properties will be removed from rental platforms under the proposed changes, including locations already converted for hospitality use. “Basements will no longer be allowed for use: Rental spaces must serve as primary residential use areas, with natural light, ventilation and air conditioning,” Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni told state-run television ahead of the debate.

Nigeria's anti-graft agency has arrested 105 people, including four Chinese nationals, for suspected involvement in an internet fraud scheme targeting hotels in Europe and elsewhere, a spokesperson said on Friday. The suspects were arrested on Thursday during a raid on an apartment in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesperson Dele Oyewale said in a statement. Last month almost 800 people, including 148 Chinese and 40 Filipino nationals, were arrested in a raid on a building suspected of being a hub for fraudsters who lured victims with offers of romance, then pressed them to hand over cash for phoney cryptocurrency investments.

Sweden granted the lowest number of residence permits to asylum seekers and their relatives on record in 2024, a boost for the right-wing government which pledged on Friday to keep bringing the number down further. Sweden's minority government and its backers, the far-right and anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, won the 2022 election on a promise to keep reducing immigration and gang crime, which they say are linked. Since then it has introduced and proposed several measures to make Sweden less attractive to immigrants, such as making it harder to become a citizen and gain residence permits, less generous rules for bringing family members to Sweden and slashed the number of UNHCR quota immigrants accepted.
