Kimberly Papermakers, Freedom Irish sit atop area high school football rankings

Here's the third edition of the Post-Crescent high school football rankings, separated in large and small school divisions. Teams are ranked on a "pound-for-pound" system where the team's success is measured in relation to enrollment size.

Large schools (Divisions 1-3)

1. Kimberly (3-0): Papermakers running back Blake Barry has 414 yards on 46 carries (9.0 average) this season with seven touchdowns. Kimberly has a tough test this week with rival Appleton North. Next: Friday at Appleton North.

2. Neenah (3-0): Opposing quarterbacks have completed 49% of their passes with just two touchdowns and five interceptions against the Rockets defense. Running back Jase Jenkins is third in the state in rushing yards (674) and tied for second in touchdowns (11). Next: Friday vs. Fond du Lac.

3. Appleton North (3-0): Lightning defense pitches back-to-back shutouts the past two weeks after 24-0 win over Kaukauna. Next: Friday vs. Kimberly.

4. Menasha (2-1): Bluejays get the job done in 22-7 victory over Manitowoc on Friday. Team's next three opponents are a combined 0-9. Next: Friday vs. Green Bay West.

5. Fox Valley Lutheran (3-0): Foxes have outscored their opponents 149-29. They renew their rivalry with Xavier this week in the Apple Bowl. Quarterback Liam Heiges is tied for second in the state in touchdown passes (12). Next: Friday vs. Xavier.

Also: Kaukauna (1-2), Appleton East (1-2), Appleton West (1-2).

Small schools (Divisions 4-7)

1. Freedom (3-0): Irish averaging 49.3 points a game with Carter Kriewaldt averaging 11.3 yards a carry with 39 carries for 442 yards and eight touchdowns. Next: Friday vs. Seymour.

2. Wrightstown (3-0): Tigers scored all of their points over the second and third quarters in their 35-8 victory over Seymour last week. Next: Friday vs. Waupaca.

3. Little Chute (3-0): Mustangs rout Shawano 56-21 and have allowed just 27 points all season. Next: Friday vs. New London.

4. Weyauwega-Fremont (3-0): The Warhawks make their first appearance in the rankings and are led by sophomore running back Cashten Hoffman (50 carries, 362 yards, three touchdowns) and junior running back Brayden Arndt (11-280-3). Next: Friday at Spencer/Columbus Catholic.

5. Clintonville (2-1): Truckers tumble three spots after 32-24 loss to Crandon. Quarterback Kade Rosenow is fourth in the state in passing yards (879). Next: Friday at Crivitz.

Also: Shiocton (2-1), St. Mary Catholic (2-0, 8-player), Manawa (2-1), Hilbert (2-1).
