Junior Khoi Thurmon scored 25 points Monday night to lead the Griffins (17-5) to a victory over the Blue Streaks (15-7) in the opening game of the Canton Play-By-Play Classic at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.
Buchtel led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter and extended its lead to 37-25 at halftime and 52-34 through three quarters.
Buchtel sophomore Zevin Gadson scored 16 points, junior Marcel Boyce Jr. contributed 13 points and junior Christian Harmon added nine points and freshman Stevie Diamond had five points.
Camden Horning paced Lake with 18 points, and Caleb Collins and Chance Casenhiser scored seven points apiece.
"Our guys did a good job of adjusting defensively against a team like Lake that is very disciplined," Buchtel coach Rayshon Dent said. "They run their offensive sets very well and their coach [Tom McBride] does a good job of transitioning them into different types of offense. Our guys stayed focused on the task at hand as far as finishing up the regular season and going into the tournament on the right note."
Monday's win over Lake was Buchtel's sixth in a row after recent victories against North, Kenmore-Garfield, Cincinnati Taft, East and Brecksville. The Griffins have won 10 of their past 11 games with additional wins over Firestone, Ellet, Dayton Dunbar and East, and a loss to Gahanna Lincoln.
"Wins like this against a good team gives us confidence," Dent said. "I feel good about this team going into the playoffs."
Buchtel is set to host Oberlin Firelands or Cleveland John F. Kennedy in a Division II sectional final at 7 p.m. Friday.
