Kamala Harris accepts the historic Democratic VP nomination

Yahoo Finance’s Jessica Smith joins the On the Move panel to break down the third night of the Democratic National Convention where Kamala Harris accepted the VP nomination and former President Barack Obama spoke on Trump's presidency.

Video Transcript

JULIE HYMAN: Thanks, Melody and Dan. I want to circle back around to politics right now because this is the final night of the Democratic convention-- national convention tonight, the one at which we will finally hear from the nominee himself, Joe Biden.

Our Jessica Smith's in Washington. She has been watching it all from home, as have we all. So, Jess, what stood out to you from last night, and what can we expect from tonight?

JESSICA SMITH: Well, Senator Harris's speech last night was definitely one of the standouts. It was historic. And as she made her acceptance speech, she talked about her family. She specifically mentioned her mom who she says instilled in her the values that she holds today and inspired her into public service. Here's Senator Harris.

KAMALA HARRIS: I keep thinking about that 25-year-old Indian woman, all of five feet tall, who gave birth to me at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California. On that day, she probably could have never imagined that I would be standing before you now and speaking these words. I accept your nomination for vice president of the United States of America.

JESSICA SMITH: Harris went on to say that President Trump's failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods, and she said that President Biden would be able to lead the nation out of what she called "constant chaos."

Now, we also heard from former President Barack Obama. He had very harsh words for President Trump. He says that President Trump has not been treating the presidency as anything more than a reality show. He urged people to get out and vote, and he says democracy is on the line.

BARACK OBAMA: I have sat in the Oval Office with both of the men who are running for president. I never expected that my successor would embrace my vision or continue my policies. I did hope, for the sake of our country, that Donald Trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously, that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care. But he never did.

JESSICA SMITH: He also went on to praise his former vice president, Joe Biden, saying that he was a brother and that he made him a better president.

Now, Biden will give his acceptance speech tonight, as you mentioned, in the final night of the convention. This is a moment that Biden has been working for for decades.

We will also hear from some former 2020 candidates including Mike Bloomberg, Senator Cory Booker, and former Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Julie.

JULIE HYMAN: Jessica, thank you so much. In just a few moments, we will hear from Tom Perez, who is the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, so stay tuned. We will continue the conversation about the convention.
