Josh Barrick was a husband and father of two young children and was a "friend to all."

He was killed April 10 in the mass shooting at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville.

"To know Josh is to love Josh, and this loss is felt in the hearts of so many," says a GoFundMe set up by a family friend. "He was truly a remarkable man and was taken from us far too soon."

Barrick, 40, "loved his family and friends above all else," the GoFundme says. On top of being a husband and father, he also coached first and second grade basketball teams at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Cherrywood Road.

Barrick was the senior vice president of Commercial Real Estate Banking at Old National — a job he'd held for less than a year, according to his LinkedIn.

"Our hearts are heavy, they are broken, and we are searching for answers," the Rev. Shayne Duvall, Holy Trinity's pastor, wrote on Facebook.

Duvall told his parish during a vigil the night of the shootings that Barrick was one of the first people to welcome him when Duvall started at Holy Trinity less than a year ago.

He said he was here to help any way he could, Duvall said. They had recently discussed upcoming plans for the parish.

“The last thing he said was, ‘Father, I’ll do whatever you ask. You can count on me,'" Duvall told the packed church.

Barrick had spent nearly 20 years in the banking sector, previously holding a similar role at WesBanco before moving to Old National in August 2022. In 2020, Barrick was named one of Louisville Business First's 20 People to Know in Banking.

He graduated from Louisville's Trinity High School and attended college at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

“Josh was an ideal classmate, a conscientious student and friend to all, who embodied the brotherhood of Trinity," said Mike Paradis, the chair-elect of the Trinity School Board and one of Barrick's classmates. "He was a devoted and loving husband and father who will be missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know him.”

A statement from Trinity High School described Barrick as an "outstanding student" who made honor roll every year. He was in the science department's National Honor Society and held a leadership role in Future Business Leaders of America. He volunteered at the annual bloodmobile and came back as an alumnus to help with senior retreats.

Barrick ran cross country and played basketball on top of intramural softball and volleyball, the school said.

Chris Glasser, a childhood friend of Barrick's, described him as "a constant of my childhood," with core memories coming from basketball games.

"Josh's favorite players were Reggie Miller and Chris Mullin, and that was his game too," Glasser shared on Twitter Tuesday. "An efficient, effortless scorer. He was someone we all feared in a game of knockout."

Glasser said the two would run into each other downtown sometimes and would always stop to catch up.

"He was just a sweet, gentle, soft-spoken guy," Glasser said. "I'm so incredibly sad for his family."

Xavier University, Barrick's alma mater, was already scheduled to host a Remembrance Service for lives lost during the past semester on Tuesday. Barrick was added to the list of those to be remembered during the service.

“Everyone at Xavier University is heart-broken for Joshua and his family," Xavier President Colleen Hanycz said in a statement. "We extend our deepest of sympathies to his family."

Five Old National Bank employees were killed in Monday's shooting at Old National Bank on East Main Street in downtown Louisville. The shooter, who also worked at the bank, also died.

The other victims were:

“Josh is in a better place," Duvall told his parish. "Yes, his life was taken too young, too tragically, but for whatever reason, our Lord was ready for him. We don’t have to have all of the answers today, or even tomorrow.”

Barrick's funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Cherrywood Road.
