New Jersey native SZA wins Grammy award with Doja Cat for 'Kiss Me More'
One of New Jersey's own brought home some hardware Sunday night at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, as SZA won best pop duo-group performance for “Kiss Me More” with Doja Cat.
Cat told SZA that she’s “everything to me” and the “epitome of talent” as she tried to hold back tears Sunday night at the ceremony.
“This is a big deal,” Cat said after she darted to the podium. SZA, a Maplewood native, beat her by a few seconds despite climbing onstage on crutches with the help of Lady Gaga.
“I feel like me and SZA are similar in the way that we both grew up with spiritual backgrounds,” she continued. “But she was perfect for this song.”
The win marked the first Grammy for SZA, born Solána Imani Rowe and a Columbia High School graduate. She shared in four other nominations this year, as well as several in each of 2018 and 2019.
This year's Grammys had additional New Jersey flair, as Clifton's Rachel Zegler took the stage for an "In Memoriam" performance.
SZA has stayed connected to her Jersey roots over the years. In 2020, she joined Gov. Phil Murphy for an Instagram event confirming Juneteenth as a state holiday.
She noted at the time that “Jersey as a whole has so much potential to be just this amazing resting place for diversity and growth and learning.”
