Jayland Walker death, 4th of July, Tropical Storm Colin: 5 things to know Monday

Authorities investigating fatal shooting of Jayland Walker

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation into the fatal shooting of Black motorist Jayland Walker. Authorities on Sunday released video of the shooting of Walker, 25, in a hail of bullets minutes after Akron police say he fled a traffic stop on June 27. Police Chief Stephen Mylett said the medical examiner found about 60 wounds on Walker's body, although the exact number of shots fired has not been determined. The eight officers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and the city canceled its Fourth of July festival. Video showed a gun on the front seat of Walker's car, and Mylett said footage appeared to show the flash of a gun from the car during the chase. But he apparently was unarmed as he fled the car and ran from police, the chief said. NAACP President Derrick Johnson issued a statement saying the officers involved should be held accountable. "This Black man was killed – struck more than 60 times by 90 fired bullets – for a possible traffic violation," he said. Late Sunday, police in full riot gear fired a dozen tear gas canisters to disperse a handful of protesters outside the justice center, WKYC-TV reported.

Tropical Storm Colin brings heavy rain to North, South Carolina

Tropical Storm Colin – the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season – drenched parts of South Carolina and is expected to continue its trajectory to the northeast and dissipate over the western Atlantic on Monday, the National Hurricane Center said. Tropical storm warnings were issued early Saturday for parts of the South and North Carolina coasts, but the storm was "losing organization," the hurricane center later said. Some Fourth of July celebrations planned Saturday in Charleston, South Carolina, were canceled after significant water had pooled on the field at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park and more rain was expected. Organizers were also forced to cancel a festival planned in Southport, North Carolina. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Bonnie swept through parts of Nicaragua on Saturday, threatening flooding and heavy rain of up to 8 inches. Bonnie is expected to reach hurricane force by Monday off the southern coast of Mexico, but is unlikely to make a direct hit on land.

Suspect in deadly shooting at Copenhagen mall to be arraigned

The suspect in a shooting inside a busy shopping mall in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, that killed three people and seriously wounded four others is set to be arraigned Monday on preliminary charges of murder, authorities said. A gunman opened fire on Sunday afternoon in the Field's shopping mall, one of Scandinavia's biggest. Copenhagen chief police inspector Søren Thomassen said a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, both Danes, and a 47-year-old Russian man were killed. Four other people – two Danish and two Swedish citizens – were treated for gunshot wounds and were in critical but stable condition, Thomassen said. Several other people received minor injuries as they fled the shopping mall, he added. A 22-year-old Danish man was arrested and there was no indication that anyone else was involved in the attack, Thomassen said. He said the motive is unclear and there is nothing suggesting terrorism. The shooting was the worst gun attack in Denmark since February 2015.

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest returns

This year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island begins at 11 a.m. ET Monday. The top finisher among the men and the women each win $20,000 – the most lucrative of the contests sponsored by Major League Eating. Joey Chestnut, a 14-time champion, hasn't been able to practice as much this year after breaking his leg in December, battling COVID-19 and grieving the loss of his mom, but he is still confident he'll win his 15th crown. Miki Sudo and Nick Wehry, who are engaged, are expected to eat about 90 hot dogs combined, re-earning their nickname, "The Hungry Couple," after Sudo took last year off while she was pregnant. In 2020, Sudo and Wehry shattered the previous couples record by devouring a combined 88 hot dogs – buns included. Sudo ate 48½ and Wehry ate 39½.
