Iowa's Planned Parenthood affiliate names new CEO

Ruth Richardson has been named as the new CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States. She steps into the new role Oct. 6, 2022.

Good morning.

The Planned Parenthood affiliate in Iowa has named a new chief executive officer.

Ruth Richardson, a Minnesota state legislator with experience leading a health-care nonprofit, has been selected as the new head of Planned Parenthood North Central States. The $70 million nonprofit operates reproductive and sexual health care clinics in Iowa and in four other states.

This is health-care reporter Michaela Ramm. I sat down with Richardson earlier this week to discuss her new role.

It's probably no surprise that the future of abortion is the biggest question in her mind.

Only one state in the region — Minnesota — is considered friendly toward abortion rights. The rest (Iowa included) have been categorized by experts as "hostile" toward abortion access and are expected to pass restrictions in the future.

That means Minnesota could become the sole site for abortions in the region, depending on how things shake out. Should those other four states enact bans, Planned Parenthood officials said that state could see a 25% increase in out-of-state demand for abortion services.

Looking ahead, Richardson said one of her priorities will be ensuring abortion access remains in Minnesota. The early days of her tenure will be focused on getting a lay of the land, but in the weeks ahead, she wants to ensure patients have access to necessary health care "regardless of whether the political climate is friendly to abortion or not."
