Iowa State's Xavier Hutchinson drafted by Houston Texans in sixth round of NFL Draft

Xavier Hutchinson's long and fruitful football journey now includes being an NFL Draft pick.

The former Iowa State star receiver was selected by the Houston Texans with the 28th pick of the sixth round (205th overall) on Saturday.

It was an unlikely fate for a lightly-recruited high school prospect out of Jacksonville, Florida who went to junior college, where he hardly even played as a freshman. Iowa State offered him based on what it saw during a spring practice.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Hutchinson would go on to an All-American career at Iowa State, playing a critical role in the Cyclones' dream 2020 season that featured the program's first-ever Big 12 title game appearance and its first-ever January Six bowl victory with a Fiesta Bowl championship.

His three-year stint at Iowa State included 254 catches for 2,929 yards and 15 touchdowns.

In Houston, he'll link up with former Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud, who was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft.
