Iowa State's Matt Campbell's revamped coaching staff now includes a special teams coordinator
Iowa State football now has a special teams coach.
Coach Matt Campbell officially added two new assistants to his staffing turnover Thursday, including Jordan Langs, who will be the special teams coordinator and running backs coach.
The special teams unit has been a problem for the Cyclones in recent seasons. Multiple times, Campbell has defended his decision to not have an on-field coach designated to work with all facets of a unit that has needed attention. That’s about to change.
Campbell also said Thursday that Hank Poteat will be the new cornerbacks coach, replacing Matt Caponi, who left to become the defensive coordinator at North Texas.
The staff turnover has been the most massive since Campbell has been at Iowa State. His eighth-season offensive staff will include new offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, tight ends coach Taylor Mouser, offensive line coach Ryan Clanton, and Langs. Poteat is the only change to the veteran defensive staff.
Scheelhaase, who has coached Cyclones wide receivers and running backs, is replacing Tom Manning. Clanton, Langs and Poteat are new to the program.

Campbell, who also added new strength and conditioning coordinator Reid Kagy to the staff after last season's team went 4-8 overall and 1-8 in the Big 12, still hasn’t announced a quarterbacks coach.
Langs, 34, comes to Iowa State after six seasons as the NAIA Indiana Wesleyan head coach. Twice, he was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast Coach of the Year.
“Jordan is an experienced leader of men that has been successful as a head coach,” Campbell said in an athletics department release. “His teams have followed his leadership and had success both on the field and in the classroom. He’s developed players and built a program from the ground up. We are excited to add someone with his experience to our coaching staff.”

Poteat coached cornerbacks at Wisconsin for the past two seasons. He was part of a Badgers defensive staff that helped them finish 10th nationally in total defense (303.5 yards per game), and seventh in the nation with 17 interceptions.
During 10 NFL seasons, Poteat, 45, played for the New England Patriots and won a Super Bowl in 2005. He also played professionally for Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, the Jets and Cleveland.
“Hank has been successful as a player, both at the collegiate and professional level, and that has carried over to him being successful as a coach,” Campbell said. “The players that have trained under him have had great success as well. I look forward to watching him lead the young men in our cornerback room.”
