Iowa high school state baseball tournament to stay in Carroll and Iowa City through 2024
The Iowa high school state baseball tournament is staying in Carroll and Iowa City.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced Monday it’s extending its agreements with Carroll’s Merchants Park and the University of Iowa’s Duane Banks Feld through 2024. The decision is pending board approval.
The two cities were the host of last season’s tournament. The tournament had previously been played at Principal Park, the home of the Iowa Cubs, from 2005-2020. But because the team’s schedule is now handled by Major League Baseball, the IHSAA wasn’t assured a home every summer for the dates it wanted for the tournament.
So, it went looking for a new home and found spots in Carroll, which hosted Class 1A and Class 2A play, and Iowa City, which was the home for Class 4A and Class 3A action last season. That’ll be the plan for the 2022 tournament, which will run from July 18-22 and overlap with the state softball schedule.
The IHSAA announced a three-year deal with Carroll and a year-to-year arrangement through 2024 with the University of Iowa, which has renovations planned for the 2,300-seat ballpark.
