When staff locked the doors of St. Paul’s George Latimer Central Library on Sunday evening, an unwelcome visitor remained inside.

Over the course of the night, he or she rummaged through desks and drawers on multiple floors, helped themselves to candy in the youth services area and made enough of a mess that maintenance staff arriving the next morning called the police.

“A bathroom key and an iPad remain unaccounted for,” read an internal memo issued Monday from the downtown library’s public service manager to library staff.

The memo does not confirm whether the intruder — who was caught on security camera — was identified. But it does indicate “the patron was inside the building at closing time yesterday” and will be banned from all St. Paul library locations.

A motion alarm went off over the course of the night, but no one was immediately detected. St. Paul Police responding to the location checked all entrances and exits and confirmed they were locked. A witness informed police they had seen someone leave the building, according to the memo.

A library spokesperson on Tuesday referred questions to St. Paul police, who provided an incident report indicating officers found no sign of forced entry.

The Central Library is not open Mondays, and the opening Tuesday was delayed an hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for a staff meeting. Among other precautions, the manager informed staff that a tunnel entrance will revert to a keyless fob system and maintenance staff will work with the library’s alarm company to confirm that all motion sensors are working properply.

In addition, she said closing procedures will be reviewed with staff throughout the library system.
