IHSAA basketball: Booker, Briscoe share City Player of the Year honors from coaches
Cathedral senior Xavier Booker and Crispus Attucks sophomore Dezmon Briscoe are the co-City Players of the Year as voted by the coaches from the City Alliance.
The 6-10 Booker, a McDonald’s All-American and Michigan State recruit, helped Cathedral to a Class 4A state championship as a junior and is currently averaging 14.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game for the seventh-ranked Irish, who are 17-5 going into Sectional 10 at Warren Central this week.
The 6-7 Briscoe led Attucks (16-7) to the City tournament championship, closing with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in 61-51 win over Cathedral for the title. Briscoe is averaging 15.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, 4.0 blocked shots and 2.5 assists for the season.
Attucks coach Chris Hawkins is the City Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers to the City title for the second time in four years. Hawkins, who is 131-49 in seven seasons, leads Attucks into a Sectional 10 first-round game Wednesday against Tech.
