Hundreds waiting for power in Arkansas River Valley Monday

Hundreds of people west of Fort Smith in the Arkansas River Valley waited for power to be restored Monday, a day after storms packing high winds and a tornado downed trees and power lines late Saturday and early Sunday.

Crews worked to restore power to Fort Smith residents Monday, Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company reported. There had been more than 2,000 outages reported Sunday. There were thousands without power from the Barling area in south Fort Smith to north Fort Smith. About 1 a.m. Sunday winds clocked up to 90 mph blasted across eastern Oklahoma and slammed parts of western Arkansas.

Temperatures will be in the 90s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service reported.

A tornado touched down near Prairie View and left debris across a trail into Johnson County, said Tobi Miller, Logan County's emergency management director.

A house on State Highway 288 at Walker Road in Prairie View had damage and a chicken house on Fox Road in Prairie View was hit by the tornado, Miller said. Another chicken house was destroyed on State Highway 22, Miller said. No one was injured.

The tornado about 10 miles northeast of Paris touched down about 1:10 a.m. Miller said she got a call about it from a storm spotter a minute later.

A crew from the National Weather Service determined the tornado was an F2 and was 700 yards wide on the ground northeast of Paris.

In Creek County, Oklahoma, an Oilton man was killed when a tree landed on his house, and more than 100,000 people were without power due to high winds that hit around midnight Saturday.

Monday morning there were 400 people without power in Scranton, 328 people in Charleston, 169 people, in Altus, 154 people in Paris waiting for restoration as crews worked their way east from Fort Smith.
