Hundreds of new homes coming to Callaway as it and Tyndall Air Force Base rebuild from hurricane
CALLAWAY — More housing is on the way to Callaway as the city continues to rebuild and grow from the damage of Hurricane Michael.
Callaway City commissioners on Tuesday approved two development orders to bring hundreds of new homes along Highway 22. Ed Cook, Callaway city manager, said developers have already started construction for the two new subdivisions because of Callaway's need for more housing, given its close proximity to Tyndall Air Force Base, which is also recovering from hurricane damage.

"There's just a huge desire for homes (in Callaway), so they are getting a move on things pretty fast," Cook said. "We know the storm came in and did a lot of damage, but it's given the city room for many opportunities and growth, so we're going to embrace that."
In the first order, Callaway Bayou Townhomes will feature a 276-unit multi-family townhouse subdivision on more than 25 acres of land — building 10 units per acre with about 20 feet of yard space. Also, each unit will have its own parking accommodations.
The subdivision is located east of Callaway Bayou on North Highway 22.
Alexandra’s Park will be the newest residential area on South Highway 22. The project will occur in three phases, as 341 single-family homes are expected to be built across 77 acres. Each lot is expected to range between 50 and 60 feet wide.
The new property will be located north of James Street and west of the Callaway Sports Complex. In addition, a pedestrian gate will be added to the neighborhood allowing access into the ballpark.
"We're excited about the growth and that Tyndall Air Force Base is going to come back and be considered the base of the future," Cook said. "And all that will do is continue to spark economic development and residential growth in our area."
Cook said improvements will be made at the intersection of the new neighborhoods and that the Florida Department of Transportation would soon widen Highway 22.
