Humane Society hopes to 'Clear the Shelter' at Saturday's pet adoption day
The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County hopes to place more than 100 animals into new homes when it sponsors its annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption Aug. 27 beginning at 10 a.m.
Along with hundreds of animal rescue organizations and shelters across the country, the Humane Society of Vero Beach will waive all adoption fees for dogs, cats and all other adoptable animals in their care.
Adoptions include spay/neuter, up-to-date age-appropriate vaccines, a microchip, a take home starter bag, a cardboard carrier (for cats), and a collar and leash for dogs.
Since 2015, Clear the Shelters Day has helped more than 250,000 pets across the United States and Puerto Rico find their forever home, according to HSVB’s Chief Executive Officer Kate Meghji.
“We’re excited to partner with NBC and Telemundo again for the annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption event,” said Meghji. “When it began, the day was a novel way to see how many animals we can get adopted in one day. But now, it’s become almost magical. I swear sometimes there is fairy dust in the air. People are so excited to be part of the adoption event.”
NBCUniversal’s Clear The Shelters campaign was inspired by a 2014 North Texas pet adoption event hosted by NBC 5/KXAS and Telemundo 39/KXTX and dozens of area shelters that resulted in the most adopted pets in one day for North Texas.
In the 2019 event, the Humane Society of Vero Beach placed 109 animals in new homes, second only to the Miami Humane Society in South Florida. People lined up early in the morning to meet the animals available for adoption, Meghji said.
“Clear the Shelters is a wonderful way for us to connect with more families across our community, said Meghji. “We want to see every pet in our shelter in a loving home by the end of the day.”
