Chief of Detectives Travis Theriot was appointed as the next Chief of Police for Houma Police Department.

"I feel like we have one of the best organizations in the area, if not the best," Theriot said, speaking before the Terrebonne Parish Council Tuesday night. "We plan on doing great things going forward."

Houma's Chief of Police is appointed by Parish President Gordy Dove, after which the Parish Council must vote to ratify the choice. The vote will take place on March 15.

Former Police Chief Dana Coleman retired on Feb. 28, and will begin with the Louisiana Attorney General's office investigating public corruption Monday. Speaking by phone Wednesday afternoon, Coleman said he approved of the choice.

"I think it's a great choice," he said. "Like I said, any one of them would have made an excellent chief."
