Here’s what you need to know about the latest historic home to hit Centre County’s real estate market.
Rich in history
Local history buffs might recognize the home as the Bellefonte Forge House, sometimes referred to as the John Dunlop House. According to a historical marker posted on the property, former ironmaster John Dunlop built the original house in 1803 and lived there with his wife and four daughters until his death in an iron mine collapse in 1814.
Another generation of ironmasters later lived in the home and expanded it with their wealth, notably by adding Victorian-style porches in the 1860s. Though the home later became vacant and damaged, it was restored to its former condition in the late 1900s and early 2000s.
The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 1999.
