HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Plymouth's DiRito pitches Catholic Memorial baseball past BC High
BOSTON -- Here's the best thing you could say about the BC High baseball team's performance on Wednesday: it was, in the words of first-year coach Steve Healy, "totally uncharacteristic" of the way the Eagles have played this season.
Nick DiRito's outing, on the other hand, was right in line with what he had done before.
DiRito, a senior captain from Plymouth, pitched an abbreviated two-hit shutout to lead Catholic Memorial to a 10-0 win over BC High at Monan Park. He struck out five, walked one and needed only 64 pitches (42 of them strikes) to go the distance in a game shortened to 5 innings by the mercy rule.
"The plan was just to go out there and throw strikes, attack the hitters," DiRito said. "The defense played well behind me. All-around good game."
"He's excellent," CM coach Hal Carey said of the right-hander. "He's worked hard, obviously, in the offseason. The good thing with him is that he throws hard and has multiple pitches. His fastball, curve, slider, changeup, he's comfortable throwing them in any count. He did a really good job and worked with good pace."
In his first start of the season, DiRito got a 5-inning no-decision, striking out 10 against Central Catholic in the Knights' opener. CM lost that one, 4-3, in 10 innings.
"Tough loss," DiRito said. "We battled to the end. We have a real solid team this year. Everybody 1 through 9 can hit. It's going to be a good year."
It should be a good year for BC High, too, despite the sloppy outing in this one. The Eagles (3-2) had won three straight since dropping their opener at Lincoln-Sudbury but they were done in by a gruesome start. Over the first three innings they committed three errors, threw eight wild pitches, walked four batters and hit two others, allowing the Knights to grab a 7-0 lead despite having only three hits.
In fact, CM (2-1) got hits from three of its first four batters -- Conor Coulter leadoff double, DiRito RBI double, Curt Boyd RBI single -- and then didn't get another hit until they opened the fifth inning with three straight, including a two-run triple by Nolan Mullen.
"Hats off to CM. They played well," said Healy, who grew up in Quincy and now lives in Hanover. "They outplayed us in every phase of the game today. We gotta get better."
Healy, a BC High grad, is taking over for legendary coach Norm Walsh.
Asked if it was weird not seeing Walsh in the opposing dugout, Carey, in his 18th season at the CM helm, said, "Little bit. Steve's a great coach. I know he did JV for a lot of years and helped out with the varsity last year. He's a tremendous coach. He's a little calmer than Norm. But they'll be fine. They have a good team. We play them again in a few weeks and that'll be a tough one."
