HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Barnstable defeats D-Y in battle of volleyball powerhouses

In a battle between two of Cape Cod's (and the state's) best high school girls volleyball teams, Barnstable defeated Dennis-Yarmouth in a five-set thriller on Thursday.

The Red Hawks won 26-24, 20-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-6.

Molly Gleason and Molly Fredo led the Red Hawks offense with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Sadie Wellbeloved had 38 assists to keep Barnstable moving offensively.

Grace Presswood and Ellen Swanson each had double-doubles for the Dolphins. Presswood had 21 kills and 15 digs, and Swanson finished with 11 kills and 11 digs in the loss.

In other high school action on Thursday:

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Nantucket 3, Saint John Paul II 1: The Whalers got the win over the Lions (25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20). Bianca Santos had 27 assists to lead Nantucket's offense. Delaney Burrell had 11 digs to lead the Lions.

Sturgis East 3, Nauset 0: The Storm swept the Warriors.

Falmouth 3, Sandwich 2: The Clippers edged out the Blue Knights (25-14, 16-25, 25-13, 20-25, 16-14). Christina Femino had six aces and 19 assists to lead the Clippers offense. Maci Griesbauer also had 15 kills for Falmouth.

Norfolk Aggie 3, Upper Cape 0: Upper Cape lost their game with Norfolk Aggie.

Cape Tech 3, Bristol Aggie 2: Cape Tech came out on top in five sets over Bristol Aggie (22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 15-6). Sofia Todoroff, a freshman had five kills and five aces to lead the Crusaders

Sturgis West 3, Rising Tide 0: The Navigators were victorious in their match over Rising Tide.

Old Rochester 3, Bourne 0: The Canalmen were swept by Old Rochester (19-25, 21-25, 17-25).

East Bridgewater 3, Mashpee 0: The Falcons were swept by East Bridgewater.

BOYS SOCCER

Somerset-Berkley 2, Bourne 0: The Canalmen dropped to 2-3-1 on the season after losing to Somerset-Berkley. Jake Roux blocked three shots defensively, while midfielder Scott Lafleur set up three chances for Bourne.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bristol Aggie 4, Cape Tech 1: The Crusaders were beaten by Bristol Aggie.

Somerset Berkley 7, Bourne 1: The Canalmen suffered the loss to Somerset Berkley.

FIELD HOCKEY

Norwell 6, Mashpee 0: The Falcons drop to 0-4-0 on the season after losing to Norwell.

Sturgis East 1, Martha's Vineyard 0: Molly Reino scored the games only goal in the third quarter to give the Storm the win.

Sandwich 1, Nauset 0: Megan Dwyer set up Quinn Jordan for the game winning goal. Sandwich improves to 4-0, and 2-0 in the league.

Monomoy 1, Barnstable 0: The Sharks handed Barnstable its first loss of the season.

BOYS GOLF

Sandwich 246, Bridgewater-Raynham 252: Thomas Hurley was the medalist for the Blue Knights, shooting a 38, including two pars to help guide Sandwich to a narrow win at Sandwich Hollows. Emma Abramson also shot a sub-40 score, registering a 39 for the Blue Knights.

Monomoy 6, Rising Tide 0: Jackson Rocco and Casey Huse both tied with the lowest score of the day, shooting a 37 for the Sharks who beat Rising Tide at Cranberry Valley.

Westport 9, Cape Tech 0: The Crusaders were beaten by Westport.

Nantucket 4, JPII 2: Matt Curley shot a 36 to be the medalist for the Lions. However despite that, and Jack Carstensen's 38, Nantucket came out on top.

Barnstable 236, D-Y 296: Barnstable's Chad Tordone was the medalsit for the day, shooting a 36 to help the Red Hawks win.
