High School Football: What happened around Marion County during Week 10 action?

One week separates Marion County teams from playoff seeding. That made victories in Week 10 so crucial in the Ocala area.

We started the week early with Lake Weir (2-8) challenging Crescent City (4-5) in the last Hurricane Ian makeup game of the year. We jumped to a six-game slate on Friday night. Four games came in out-of-town matchups, most of which ended in favor of the home team.

Lake Weir 30, Crescent City 28

The Hurricanes ended the regular season on a two-game win streak. It placed them a half game out of first place in their district. An Atlantic loss would have sealed them in as district champs. However, Atlantic defeated Taylor Friday night, 47-6, dropping Lake Weir to third. The Hurricanes' postseason hopes are still alive - depending on next week's games.

South Sumter 46, Dunnellon 0

The Tigers (5-4) dropped their second game in a row. They're in the toughest stretch of the season, facing back-to-back undefeated teams. Dunnellon's final district loss solidified the standings as the Tigers fell to second place.

Belleview 48, Tavares 0

Belleview (4-5) started the game strongly and took it into overdrive during the second half. At the end of the first quarter, they led 14-0. Davonte Welcome threw two touchdowns, Jaheem Shannon and Eric McLaughlin both scored twice. The defense got in on the action with a pick-six. The Rattlers went one for two on two-point conversions.

Trinity Catholic 51, P.K. Yonge 7

The Celtics (6-2) closed out the season on a four-game winning streak and a district championship. Six players were named to the all-district team, including Beau Beard, who won District 7 player of the year. They'll head to the postseason with a three-week layoff.

Ocala Christian 20, St. John Lutheran 6

The Crusader (3-7) broke their three game losing streak against the Saints (2-8). Freshman running back Jose Gomez Devila recorded 141 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Crusader junior running back Skyler Forella chipped in 49 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, as well as 10 solo and 4 assisted tackles on defense. Both eight-man football squads will hit the road to close the season.

Forest 34, West Port 6

Forest (5-4) takes a decisive win behind Vimel Poole Jr.'s record-setting night. After throwing for 216 yards and three touchdowns, Poole broke Wildcat single season records in passing yards, touchdowns, completions, and pass attempts. Forest has another regular-season game - vs. rival Vanguard - to push Poole's overall numbers to another level. The Wolf Pack finished the season 4-6 after a three- game slide.
