Hanover eagle cam: Viewers anxiously await the arrival of the first egg
February means one thing for area eagle enthusiasts: Counting down the days until the arrival of the first egg in the Hanover eagle nest.
Since 2015, "Liberty," the female bald eagle, has laid her first egg before the end of the month.
But with only six days to go, and no egg visible in the nest near Codorus State Park, viewers of the livestream are wondering if this could be the first year without one.
While most of the eggs have come around the middle of the month, the latest laying was Feb. 26 in 2019. The earliest arrival was on Feb. 2 in 2021.

A second egg will typically arrive within a few days of the first. And, of course, the hope is that the eggs will hatch and the eaglets will fledge successfully, although that has not always been the case. In 2018, both eggs were deemed not viable after they were covered in snow after Winter Storm Toby. And in 2016, the first eaglet died days after hatching and after the other egg didn't hatch, one of the eagles finally ate it.
The livestream, run through a Pennsylvania Game Commission partnership with Comcast Business and HDOnTap, captures the activity of the nest near Codorus State Park. Viewers have been following the antics of "Liberty" and "Freedom" -- the names given to the female and male bald eagles -- since 2015.
