Hall of Fame girls basketball coach Rachel Matakas steps down at Valley Vista
Rachel Matakas, a Hall of Fame coach who led Surprise Valley Vista to the past three 6A girls basketball state championships, recently stepped down, citing a health issue.
Neither Principal Andrew Frazier nor Athletic Director Peter Jelovic returned a message from The Republic on Matakas' resignation late in the season.
The 32-team Open Division state tournament starts tonight with No. 17-seed Valley Vista (18-8) traveling to play No. 16 Peoria Sunrise Mountain. If the team loses in either of the first two rounds, it would fall back into the 6A tournament, which begins next week.
Matakas led Valley Vista to five state championships since 2018. For the last four years, she coached Player of the Year Jennah Isai, who is now at BYU. Matakas was The Arizona Republic's 2020-21 Coach of the Year.
Last year, she entered the Arizona High School Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame.
"I have stepped away due to medical issues I am currently having," Matakas said in an email to The Republic. "I needed to make a lifestyle change as the demand for coaching and teaching was a lot.
"So, I stepped away but still helped with game planning, film break down and practice plans when I can."
Matakas said that assistant coach Brook Hinkens has stepped in as the coach, "and is doing a fantastic job keeping the program moving forward."
