H.S. track: Abilene teams have big day at area meet
LUBBOCK – The Abilene Cooper boys edged crosstown rival Abilene High in the 800-meter relay to highlight a big day for Abilene teams at the Districts 3- and 4-5A area meet Friday at Lowrey Field.
The Cougars won the 800 relay in 1 minutes, 27.88 seconds, while AHS was right on their heels at 1:27.95.
The Eagles also finished second in the 400 relay (42.39), behind Lubbock-Cooper (41.78).
AHS also nabbed a region berth in the 1,600 relay with a fourth-place finish (3:26.20.)
Both the boys and girls had individual golden moments at the area meet.
Wylie’s Kendrick Vanderbilt and Ryan Blake, along with AHS’ Devare Payne, each won events on the boys’ side.
Abilene Cooper’s Jazlyn Hatcher and Anne-Lie Waite each came up golden for the girls, along with AHS’ Zoe Vann.
Boys region qualifiers
Payne won the 110 hurdles (14.60), beating Lubbock Coronado’s Camrien Manahan (14.89). AHS’ Josh Melson was third (15.14).
Melson finished second in the 300 hurdles (41.26). Cooper Morris of Lubbock-Cooper won it (40.24).
Vanderbilt won the boys shot put with a toss of 50 feet, 8½ inches. Lubbock-Cooper’s Ty Politte was second (50-5¼).
Ryan edged Vanderbilt for the discus title. Ryan threw 152-0, while Vanderbilt threw 151-5.
AHS’ Andruw Villa was second in the 3,200 (9:37.02), second in the 800 (2:01.82) and third in the 1,600 (4:30.75).
Abilene Cooper’s Daniel Bray nabbed second in the 100 (10.45) – just .02 behind winner Callan Ritz of Lubbock-Cooper. Wylie’s Braden Regala as third (10.50).
Regala came back to finish second in the 200 (22.07) behind Lubbock-Cooper’s Ritz (21.76).
Abilene Cooper’s Christian Rico also finished second in the 400 (52.18), nearly two seconds behind Amarillo Tascosa’s Makya Beacham (50.39).
Girls region qualifiers
Vann won the pole vault (11-6), beating out Tascosa’s Hollis Stowe by a half-foot. Wylie’s Rachael Sorenson was third (10-0).
Hatcher won the long jump (18-4¼) – edging Lubbock-Cooper’s Sofia De Groot (18-4). Abilene Cooper’s Asharee Davis was fourth (16-10¾).
Davis also nabbed a region berth in the triple jump (4th, 36-0¼).
The Lady Coogs’ Waite won the 100 (12.18), beating out Lubbock-Cooper’s Keagan Galmor (12.37) and AHS’ Malia Williams (12.37). Waite also was third in the 200 (24.65).
Abilene Cooper’s Justine Kalassa Tshibuabua took second in the shot put (36-4¾).
AHS’ Marin Murray finished third in the 3,200 (12:01.63).
AHS finished third in the 400 relay (49.10), and Wylie was third in the 1,600 relay (4:01.91).
