H.S. golf: Abilene Wylie girls finish sixth at region; Goodman leads Eula girls
LUBBOCK – Grapevine’s Chloe Sirkin shot 1-under-par 70 to win the Region I-5A girls golf tournament by eight strokes Tuesday at The Rawls Course.
Sirkin, who led the tournament after Day 1, shooting 71, topped Burleson Centennial’s Makena Junkin by nine strokes. Both were the only representatives of their school and each claimed one of the three at-large state berths.
The other went to Joshua’s Kaylee Yuan, who tied Argyle’s Madison Wert for third with a two-day total 150. Wert won a playoff for third place, but Yuan gets a state berth since Arygle advances as a team.
In fact, Argyle won the tournament with a 641 – eight shots better than Aledo. Amarillo High Black (668) beat District 4-5A champion Lubbock-Cooper for the final state berth.
The top three teams and top three players not on a state qualifying team advance to state May 15-16 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.
Wylie (368-368—736) finished sixth, led by Amelie Liew (81-80—161), who tied Lubbock-Cooper’s Ayers Findley (81-80—161) for ninth.
Wylie’s Kierra Fierro (92-83—172) tied another for 18th, while Brighton Diller (92-98—190), Linden Smalley (106-110—216) and Zoey Anzaldua (108-107—215) rounded out the Lady Bulldogs’ scores.
“As a coach, I am super proud of my girls,” Wylie coach Justin Jarrett said. “They did an amazing job staying composed and competing with good competition. I had a goal of beating half the field in my head, and we accomplished just that by finishing sixth. When you have teams like Argyle and Aledo in your region, you know the competition is going to be tough.”
Jarrett was encouraged, since he has a young team.
“I am just so happy we were able to make it (to region) as a team with sophomores and freshmen. What a big step towards our future. All the girls played so hard and did as I asked.”
